The skill of the performer rests in the extemporaneous vocal ornamentation of this basic melodic framework. Parisa s innovative approach with soft\, contemplative gestures in her voice and mastery of this form has won her a passionate following in Iran and abroad. Parisa has been barred from performing publicly in Iran since 1979\, though she has many students and performs frequently on the international stage. During her 1988 USA tour\, the Los Angeles Times described Parisa as “a confident\, controlled singer\, sang with great warmth and skill\, her multi-timbered voice moving with exquisite grace through the music’s intricate vocal ornamentation’s\, while vividly underscoring the splendid imagery of the words.” \nParisa will sing selected verses from Rumi\, Hafez and Saadi – greatest Persian poets of all time. Their program will convey profound spiritual concepts\, passion for God the beloved and praising of the beauty of nature. The rich imagery of the words comes alive through Parisa s moving rendition of the poetry. \nDariush Talai on Tar (long-necked lute)\, and Setar virtuoso is recognized today as one of the finest interpreters of traditional Persian music. After graduating from the National Conservatory of Music in 1971\, Talai entered the School of Music at the University of Tehran\, where he received his Bachelors degree in performance and musicology. He continued to study with various masters such as Ali Akbar Shahnazi. Nur Ali Borumand\, Abdollah Davami\, Yusof Forutan\, and Said Hormozi. In a prestigious competition organized by Iranian Radio-Television in 1977\, he received three prizes for the best performance on the tar\, best performance on the setar\, and the best interpreter of Persian music among all instrumental participants. In 1979 Talai received a scholarship for higher education from the French government and since then he remained mainly in Europe and United States studying and teaching at the University of Sorbonne in Paris\, and the University of Washington in Seattle. Talai has performed both as a soloist and with his trio throughout Europe and the U.S at the Maison de la Radio France\, Opera Comique de Paris\, Theatre de la Ville de Paris\, Carnegie Hall\, and many other venues. He also collaborated on music for the theater\, dance\, and the cinema with prestigious European and American artists such as Maurice Bejart\, Michel Portal\, and Caroline Carlson. He has made numerous recordings of Persian traditional art music such as Antologie de la musique persane on Ocora\, and including a multiple-CD set on Al-Sur The Integral Repertory of Persian Art Music. Talai is not just a leading exponent but also a philosopher and aesthetician of Persian music. He has invented a system of notation\, codifying the concept of the radif\, and also has added a complete analysis of its syntax and modal structure. \nHouman Pourmehdi on tombak (goblet drum) was privileged to study under guidance of Amir Nasser Eftetah. At sixteen he continued his studies at the National Conservatory of Music in Tehran where he completed the techniques of playing tombak under supervision of Morteza Ayan. He also studied daf with great masters\, Haj Agha Sadeghi\, Mirza Agha Ghosi\, and Darvish Karim. Pourmehdi’s deep understanding of the Persian musical heritage and his beliefs in exploring new territories make him a unique musician. Pourmehdi moved to the United States in 1988 where he has given numerous concerts with renowned artists such as Mohammad Reza Lotfi \, and Hassan Nahid\, in classical Persian music and several concerts with eminent as Wadada Leo Smith\, David Johnson\, Rajeev Taranath\, and John Bergamo in contemporary world music. He currently resides in Los Angeles where he teaches tombak and daf and pursues his own studies in the world music.

The evening will consist of two sections; the first section will include 4 channel tape pieces by Shahrokh Yadegari and the second half will include improvisations by Shahla Sarehchani (vocals)\, Keyavash Nourai (violin and Kamancheh) and Shahrokh Yadegari (computer). The concert will include poems by Parvin Javadi and a composition based on the poem “Window”\, by Forough Farokhzad (1935-1967). \nPersian traditional music has a very old tradition which has been formed through many generations. Improvisation plays an important role in this music\, and therefore\, the musical expressions are in constant flow of change; however\, the musical language within this tradition has barely changed in the past few centuries. In this concert we shall use the computer\, a very modern and contemporary machinery\, and the utility of its underlying concepts in the domain of sound\, such as algorithmic composition and interactive processing of sound\, as musical tools for composition\, improvisation\, orchestration\, and spatialization\, within the Persian music language. \nComputer music is often thought to have a very specific sound which is normally attributed to the western musical traditions. The computer\, a product of logical reasoning\, has always been portrayed as a Western instrument. Thus\, computer music has often been produced based on western ideas. It is often a very difficult task for electronic/computer music to stay in a realm of a certain tradition without misappropriating some aspect of that tradition within the context of the Western frame of mind. The goal in this concert is to use the computer to accompany and create Persian traditional music but not to diverge substantially from the roots of this music. In this concert the computer is used in a number of ways such as for creating timbres which are not readily identified as electronic and are easily adaptable to the Persian music modal systems. The monophonic sounds of Persian traditional music are juxtaposed and overlaid in time and space to engulf the listener in a meditative state. By utilizing state of the art hardware and software\, all the capabilities of the computer\, such as algorithmic synthesis of sound\, highly precise control mechanisms in pitch and time structures\, and\, fluid and real-time control of spatialization\, are used in harmony with the calm spirit of Persian music. Needless to say\, just as any other instrument would\, the computer will bring its own new and interesting excursions to the formerly known sonic spaces.

The first half of the evening is devoted to Ali Akbar Moradi\, the extraordinary tanbur player from Kurdistan of Iran. He is a leading composer\, teacher and consummate performer of sacred Kurdish music. His many awards include two honorary diplomas at major music festivals in Iran. Moradi has performed as a soloist and with ensembles in festivals throughout the world. He is joined by Pejman Hadadi\, a “virtuoso” daf and tombak player\, hailed as “the finest Iranian percussionist living in the West” (KPFA Radio\, Berkeley). Hadadi has toured N. America\, Europe and Iran as a member of Dastan Ensemble\, the leading ensemble of Persian music\, and performed with masters Hossein Alizadeh\, Hossein Omoumi and Parisa. \nThe tanbur is the ancestor of most long-necked\, plucked stringed instruments. It has 14 gut frets\, and its soundboard\, made of mulberry wood has numerous small holes for optimal resonance. It has a unique playing technique whereby the strings are strummed across the soundboard with all the fingers of the right hand to produce a very full and even tremolo called shorr (literally meaning the pouring of water). The tanbur\, a sacred instrument associated with the Kurdish Sufi music of Western Iran\, has a repertoire based on ancient Persian music. Up until fifty years agothe tanbur was used only during djamm gatherings (devotional or liturgical ceremonies) of the Ahle-Haqq Sufis. \nNamah Ensemble returns to UCLA with work that lies somewhere between performance and ritual\, order and abandonment\, and tradition and innovation. Najva explores zoroastrian mythology\, religious discipline\, fiery ritual\, flights of ecstasy and the joy of togetherness as five women navigate in the unseen vastness with explosive movement and music\, stemming from trance states tempered by deep introspection. Sufi dance and music become fused with contemporary and improvisational elements\, to present dances set to the original score of Pejman Hadadi. “The perfect way to open the ritual aspects of Persian dance to a wider audience while preserving the sense of participating in something sacred” – LA Weekly. \nLed by Banafsheh Sayyad\, an MFA graduate in Dance from UCLA\, Namah Ensemble was one of the only dance groups featured in the 1st Annual UK Festival of Persian Music & Dance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London in October 2000. The Ensemble has also recently performed in Hamburg and Cologne\, as well as the World Festival of Sacred Music\, Dance Kaleidoscope\, LATC\, Skirball Cultural Center\, Persian Cultural Center in San Diego and at UC Berkeley.

DESCRIPTION:تور آمریکا و کانادا – آواز پریسا ، نوارنده نی آهنگساز و سرپرست گروه حسین عمومی، نوازنده تنبک پژمان حدادی نوازنده دف سام \n \nABOUT THE MUSIC  \nIn Persian (Iranian) classical music\, the poems\, which are usually chosen by the vocalist\, play a crucial role. This performance includes poems from Boustan by Sa’adi (13th century) and Masnavi by Rumi (Mowlana) (13th century)\, as well as a poem by Foroughi-e-Bastami. The ghazal (a form often used for love poems) by Sa’adi describes the poet’s love and passion for his beloved\, and the impressions of the beauties of nature on his sensitive soul. Although Sa’adi describes deeply spiritual concepts in his poems\, he uses common words and accessible images: each individual will then \nexperience Sa’adi’s poetic figures and vocabulary according to his/her own vision and personality. The masnavi\, which is performed as a vocal duet is by Rumi. Masnavi is a poetry form which has found its way in the classical music. \nThe classical music of Iran has been preserved and passed on from teacher to student as an oral tradition\, and it has naturally gone through changes influenced by the taste of every generation. If a change is accepted by the artists and aestheticians\, it becomes a tradition and is taught to the next generation. The use of daf and ney to accompany the avaz (vocals) is based on an old tradition. Many Persian poets of the past centuries have used the name of these instruments to describe spiritual feelings and moods. A vocalist accompanied by a ney and one or several dafs is often the subject of many miniature paintings dating back to the 12th century. \nCompared to the old traditions\, this performance offers some variations. The vocal lines are based on rhythmical poems. While the ney keeps rhythmical forms in mind\, it also improvises in accompanying the vocals\, sometimes in rhythm and sometimes in a free form inspired by the vocal lines. The tombak is in tune with the Shahed (center note) in both sections\, and one can say that this is the first time in Persian classical music that the percussion is consciously tuned to the melodic instrument. My belief that the percussion instruments need to be in tune with melodic instruments have led me to design a tunable tombak\, which is used in this recording. I should also mention that I have made some changes to the ney that allow me to play certain notes\, such as the note lying one-and-a-half step above the shahed\, which cannot be played on the traditional ney. With these changes I am able to connect the first and second sound of the ney and play all the notes of the two-and-a-half octave range of the ney. \nHossein Omoumi\, Spring 1998\nTranslated by Shahrokh Yadegari \nABOUT THE ARTISTS  \nParisa started her musical work under the supervision of the renowned Persian Radif teacher\, Mahmoud Karimi\, with whom she studied for ten years. Two years through her pupilage\, she was invited by the Ministry of Culture to work in the National Radio and Television Broadcasting. Her unique outlook and solid discipline obtained her special recognition among Iranian musicians and intellectuals during her five years collaboration with the Ministry of Culture. \nParisa’s musical talent truly bloomed when she was introduced to “The Iranian Center for Preservation and Dissimination of Music” founded by Daryoush Safvat. Her recordings of this period show a tremendous depth and growth in her musical understanding. \nIn recent years\, Parisa has been successfully concentrating on teaching and guiding young talents. Since 1995\, she has been performing in collaboration with Hossein Omoumi and Saam in various festivals and concerts in Europe. Parissa currently lives in Iran with her husband and three children. \nHossein Omoumi was born in 1944 in Isphahan\, and is considered as one of the best ney players of Iran. Captured by the magical sound of master Hassan Kassai’s ney\, Omoumi began to learn the instrument with him when he was fourteen years old. At the same time he studied the vocal Radif with master Mahmoud Karimi. Later he collaborated with the Iranian National Radio and Television broadcasting. Omoumi taught the ney at The Iranian Center for Preservation and Dissemination of Music\, the National Conservatory\, and the Tehran University. \nHe left Iran in 1984 and pursued his artistic career in Europe and the United States. He received his doctorate in architecture from the University of Florence. Later he moved to France and started teaching ney and Avaz at the Center for Oriental Music Studies in Paris. His research on the making of the ney opened new possibilities in playing techniques which have been approved by master Kassa’i. Omoumi has been featured as the ney soloist in the soundtrack of the movie “The Sweet Hereafter”\, which won several awards at the 1997 Cannes International Film Festival. \nPejman Hadadi born in 1969 in Tehran\, started playing Tombak at the age of ten under the direction of Asadolla Hejazi. Later he studied with the renowned Tombak player Bahman Rajabi to further perfect his technique and understanding of rhythm in Persian music. while loyal to the tradition of the old masters\, he uses a modern approach to technique and expression on the Tombak creating impressions of melody within rhythmic structures\, and more complex ornamentation’s of the basic sound of the Tombak. Adding a vast variety of fingering techniques are part of this modern view. His innovative style and rhythmic ingenuity has made him one of the most sought after Tombak players today. He is also an accomplished Daf player\, which he plays according to the traditional style. Hadadi is a members of Dastan ensemble and has toured the U.S.A Canada and Europe with many great musicians. He has also collaborated with many great percussionists and percussion Ensembles. Hadadi currently resides in California where he teaches Tombak and Daf. \nSaam was born in 1966 in Istanbul\, Turkey from a Persian mother and a German father. He spent his early childhood in Iran and learned the techniques of the daf from Kurdish daf players in Iran and Turkey. He also studied the fundamentals of rhythm and playing tombak under the supervision of Jamsheed Shemirani in France.\nFor the past ten years\, he has given numerous concerts as accompanying player with Hossein Omumi\, and since 1995 has participated in joint concerts of Parissa and Omoumi.
